Jazzkammer Hot Action Sexy Karaoke
Ground Fault - GF007 - CD
Jazzkammer are two Norwegian composers, John Hegre and Lasse Marhaug. They have both been in numerous bands and projects between them and are seemingly quite prolific in the underground. Their combined backgrounds bring in everything from the punk scene to the noise/ experimental, from hardcore to post rock/ improv. And now we have the product of their collaberation, 'Hot Action Sexy Karaoke'. This begins with some static noise and a bizarre speeded up version of a dance track or summin, sounds to me like the Rednecks on speed... This soon turns into a bizarre collage of elements, everything from Roadrunner samples to straight ahead noise, kung fu fighting to synthesised theme music. Insanity has never sounded so good! The rest of the disc follows in suit, making bizarre collages of created noise, sampled elements and other, unrecognisable noises. Sometimes this has an almost structured element, as if the sample material was real music, others it descends into the realms of noise, albeit very bizarre noise... The tracks on this that really made me sit up and listen were the initial insanity of 'Kung-Fu Sister', the bizarre noise of metallic, digital scrapes and bangs on 'Last Train to Silly' and the sampled music/ static noise on 'Gameboy'. Overall, this is a bizarre listen and one for any collage/ cut n paste noise fans, and though not the greatest thing I have heard from Ground Fault this is still a stong release. (www.catdam.com)
Jazzkammer: HOT ACTION SEXY KARAOKE Ground Fault GF 007
Traveling to and from the Continent on ferries in the days before they opened the Channel tunnel, I always met Norwegians in the bar and they were always totally fucked up. I formed the distinct impression that Norway was such a dreadful place that its young adult male population escaped at the earliest possible moment and spent several years drinking themselves into oblivion while rolling back and forth across the North Sea. Now it seems Norway is a smashing place to be, if the alt.music press is anything to go by (my colleagues at The Wire were certainly taken with the place), and although they refused to join the merry club euphemistically known as the European Union, they seem to be nonetheless quite au fait with the latest developments in Euro-electronica. Jazzkammer is Norwegian duo Lasse Marhaug and John Hegre (sorry lads, if I slagged off your country I’ll buy you a drink next time I see you on the ferry) and their respective backgrounds in punk (Origami Replika), trip-hop (Kaptein Kaliber) and improv (Public Enema, Der Brief) all help make “Hot Action Sexy Karaoke” a wild romp through the backwoods of contemporary electronic post-pop, and a splendid introduction to a label I hope to hear a lot of in the years to come.
