CARLOS GIFFONI / LASSE MARHAUG - Lesbian Brunch
Archive
CD // £13.99

A devastating meeting of twisted brain-cells from two of noise music’s most respected sons – Norwegian experimental feller and some-time Jazzkammer man Lasse Marhaug and No-Fun boss and friend to so many Carlos Giffoni. We last saw Giffoni tickling the bloodstained circuits on Death Unit’s incredible ‘Infinate Death’ LP, and now he’s back on form yet again making power electronics sound just as tantalising as we all knew it was. ‘Lesbian Brunch’ was originally issued as a 3” cdr on the collectible Gameboy label, but here the release has been generously expanded with a bunch of extra noise and hiccupping electrical sounds adding value to what might have been a very short album. I can’t say I need much convincing when either of these musicians are in question, but I must say that this album is pretty blinding, blending the best elements of the contemporary US noise scene with a sound-collage sound more associated with the vinyl manipulating work of Philip Jeck or Janek Schaeffer. Not as noisy as you might think, there are even moments of quite pure, beautiful minimalism which allows the noisier elements to seep through like shards of blackened glass protruding straight from hell. Crushing stuff, and evidence that there’s something truly great happening right now deep in the avant-garde… (boomkat.com)
