Testicle Hazard – ‘The Early Years’ DVDR (Freak Animal)
Testicle Hazard is the all-out noise duo of Lasse Marhaug and Tommi
Keränen, this DVDR collecting their first three live performances.
The first set is whittled down from a 40 minute performance, a large
stage and multiple cameras offering a number of possibilities for
interaction by the two and later for the visual editing, the sound
also translating comfortably. The set sets for template for their
future, a raging and unsettled meeting harsh noise improvisation,
definitely in partial tribute to Incapacitants but with a more playful
interaction and perhaps from a more divergent base. The visual
gestures don’t always match the audio, but whether this is a
reflection of the editing or the sound capture is unclear, but in any
event not really harmful to the portrayal.
The second set has more of a typical noise video production to it,
lighting largely visually obscuring Lasse while the camera looks on
jerkily and the facilities struggle to capture the full blast of
sound. The noise here seems to adopt a faster and more unstable gait,
endless high-end foraging taking place over a thick roar primed by its
volume. The underground demeanour of both performance and video
accent its intimacy, obviously a far different experience than the
spaciousness of the opening set.
The third set is an up-close view of the duo’s noise-making, some
opening water treading soon giving way to a particularly integrated
sway of harshness, the camera confronting details of the performance
with extreme close-ups and an almost salivating view, the performers
seeming to be particularly responsive to the rapturous sound being
spewed forth.
A fairly lengthy interview closes the disc, exploring the inspirations
and founding bases for Testicle Hazard and the established limits for
their approach, as well as some less related history, all in all a
genuinely interesting chat which again flows as much from the
interaction between the two. (Chris Groves,Night Science)
