Feiler Marhaug: No More Drama
LP - No Fun Prodcutions, USA - 2008 - NFP-37

Label info:

Edited live recordings, sometimes sounds like a borbetomagus storm, sometimes sounds like being in the middle of a bombing in Palestine. A Picture of this record should be next to every definition of Noise music. Lasse Marhaug plays in Jazkamer and has at least 300 other great projects solo and with other people. Dror Feiler served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces, and refused to serve in the occupied territories in the early 70's. He is now a Swedish-Israeli musician and artist and has been living in Stockholm, Sweden since 1973. He is active as a composer of modern music and enjoys giving ear problems and headaches to classically trained musicians. The most brutal vinyl record you will hear this year. Limited to 300 copies.

Reviews:

Norwegian Noise figurehead Lasse Marhaug (of Jazzkammer fame) teams up with Swedish-Israeli musician artist Dror Feiler for some jaw-droppingly extreme noise (see reverse sleeve for details: 'ALL NOISE', it rightly reads). The A-side would seem to reference the Maja Ratkje/Hild-Sofie Tafjord noise duo, Fe-Mail, titled as it is 'He-Male', and certainly the piece gives the aforementioned ladies a run for their money in terms of intensity. Marhaug's involvement guarantees top-quality, articulate clamour though, and as severe as it all gets, this always feels like the handiwork of a real craftsman. Flipping over finds the duo out-Prurienting Dominick Fernow, combining some of the most pained, wretched vocals you could care to hear from a noise record - the feedback tweets and squeals rampantly, leaving you with a sore head and a big grin on your face... total fucking annihilation, jointly channeled through the bells/circuits of dror feiler & lasse marhaug ...

seriously, this has to be one of the most impenetrable sides that’s landed here @ mms in recent months, maybe tied only with the recent mattin / junko lp on tochnit aleph for immediate annoy-on-impact tactics (it’s akin to throwing a zippo at a fireworks truck & dancing around while trying not to get burned by m-80s whizzing past your head) ...

if you think borbetomagus’ noise-improv spec borders on the “tame” ; you’ve found your next vicarious thrill-ride ... (mimaroglu music sales)

NO MORE DRAMA
No Fun

Talking of Emeralds and Carlos Giffoni, I was just pinching myself while listening to the new Emeralds CD What Happened on No Fun, worrying in case I'd accidentally slipped back through a hole in time to the mid 1970s (more on that later, if I stay awake long enough to review it). If you've heard that disc, and are wondering whether label bossman Giffoni has suddenly gone all soft and cuddly, get an earful of No More Drama and reassure yourself. You might be able to take your copy of What Happened round to mum and dad's place to play at discreet volume during Sunday lunch, but if you want them to leave you anything in their will when they die, you'd better leave this one back in the crib. Unless they're hip enough to thrill to these two terrific scorching live sets from Norwegian noisenik Marhaug and Swedish-Israeli activist (musical and otherwise) Dror Feiler, one recorded in Trondheim in November 2004, the other two and a half years later in Düdingen, Switzerland. A blurb I came across online (in several places) said something about "Borbetomagus playing a storm or being in the middle of a bombing in Palestine" – a reference no doubt to Feiler's prominent support for the Palestinian cause – but I was watching Marathon Man again a few days ago and I rather fancy the famous dentist drill torture scene probably sounded something like this inside Dustin Hoffman's head. But anyway, have a listen and choose your own image.–DW (www.paristransatlantic.com)
