Interview for Absolute Zero webzine, march 2007

Lasse Marhaug

1. I know this maybe a bit long have us the evolution of Lasse Marhaug

Born 1974. Released first cassette in 1990. Started playing live shows in
1995. Released first CD in 1996. Joined Origami Replika in 1996. Started DEL
in 1996. Started Jazzkammer in 1998. Did this interview in 2007.

2. I just reviewed " The Great Silence" its amazing harsh noise release with so many layers tell us how that CD came to be.

I have to give credit to John and Jörgen of the Golden Serenades for making
that album what it is. I recorded it in Bergen in their studio on borrowed
equipment, and they recorded and mixed it. All I do is play on it. It was
the easiest record I ever made.

3. you seem to work between the harsh noise and Soundscape/Ambient scene is it hard to switch gears on projects like that

No, I concider all I do as part of my sound palette. I also work with metal,
jazz and rock music. And I do music and sound for installations, theatre,
dance-performances and short films. It's all dealing with sound matter, and
I don't think there is much difference between the harsh and the softer
sounds.

4. Do you like to perform live or is studio creations more you love.

It's two completely different situations and I take great pleasure in both.

5. If you could just release some of you favorite personal releases would you.

I do. All the time.

6. If you could tell use a bit about your non solo project if your would be so kind.

Besides my solo work I have been involved in projects like DEL, Jazkamer, Origami Replika/Synergika, The Nordic Miracle, Phonoloid, MBD, Testicle Hazard, Fire Room, Field, Nash Kontroll, Sultans of Swing, Herb Mullin, Two Limited, Egoproblem, Satan Power, Rishaug Marhaug, The Sleazy Listeners, Sunn0))), Lasse Marhaug Band, The Zen Nuns, Tore Bøe and Climax of Copenhagen. Some longterm, some one-offs. They're all different and they all sound the same.

7. What do you enjoy most about collabing with other artist rather then just solo releases.

I enjoy both equally. I started out working solo for a number of years, so I always found that easy. But when I started to do collaborations with other artists that was also rewarding. I like to balance the two, but if I had to choose I'd choose collaborations, as they are social events.

8. Explain to us how you create your solo material. Do you have your own portable studio or go into a studio for this.

It varies. Sometimes I work on my own ProTools setup, and sometimes I go into other people studios to work. Depends on the project.

9. Your website http://www.lassemarhaug.no is very well put together tell us about that.

It was done by my friend Haavard Gjelseth of This Way Design.
http://www.thiswaydesign.com/
He's one of the best Norwegian graphic designers and it was a pleasure to work with him. He made the site more than what I expected it to be.

10. from your opinion do you see a major difference in the experimental scene from Europe vs North America.

I think the one major difference is that there is funding for the arts in Europe, and none in the States. That's the only major difference I see. The good thing about funding is that artists are able to do things they otherwise wouldn't. The danger is that some people starts to think of a having a 'career' - and using the system simply as a tool to have job, and thus producing lame music. The bad thing about the no funding situation in the US is that it's very hard for live houses and artists to survive and establish themselves - but the plus side is that everyone who does something does it purely as a labour of love.

11. Who are some of your favorite artists or composers currently out there and why

There is so much. Of the currently active ones I like: Corrupted, Sudden Infant, Lucas Abela, Astro, Borbetomagus, Hijokaidan, Incapacitants, Anla Courtis, Keiji Haino, Oren Ambarchi, Birchville Cat Motel, AM, Sewer Election, Grunt, Treriksröset, Government Alpha, John Wiese, Dave Phillips, Leslie Keffer, Ami Yoshida, Blood Stereo, Birds of Delay, Dror Feiler, Ashtray Navigations, Hototoguski, Burning Star Core, Hair Stylistics, Skull Defekts, Bus Ratch, Otomo Yoshide, Andre Borgen, Pymathon, Rotten Sound, Rulla, Pita, Paska, Prurient, Macronympha, Carlos Giffoni, Jim O'Rourke, Struggle With Pride, Gore Beyond Necropsy, Ronez, Nile, Sunn0))), MoHa, Golden Serenades, Crazy River, Fredrik Ness Sevendahl, Salvatore, Origami Tacet, Guilty Connector, Iron Maiden, Glen Frenzy, 1/3 Octave Band, The Dead
C, Bruce Russell, Hecker, Mark Wastell, Rhodri Davies, Russell Haswell, Whitehouse, Consumer Electronics, Lambsbread, Hive Mind, Kazumoto Endo, Randy Yau, 16 Bitch Pile-Up, Fe-Mail, SPUNK, Mats Gustafsson, Leif Elggren, Cosmic Mustacholi, James Plotkin, Kevin Drumm, LSD March, Devillock, Aaron Dilloway, The Cherry Point, LHD, Gerrit, Damion Romero, Bizarre Uproar, Revenge, Defiled, Impiety, Phroq, Antoine Chessex, Runzelstirn and Gurgelstöck... and probably a few more I'm forgetting.

12. what your thoughts on the digital age do you feel things like myspace, bit torrents, mp3s, digital downloads help or hurt the indie artist trying to make a living

Personally I prefer the music-object, but anything that makes people listen to music more is a good thing. Clearly the so-called problem of illegal file sharing is a problem of the music industry, not music itself, and I have no sympathy for that industry. Now they burn for their sins, it makes me happy.

13. What can we expect on future recordings

Hopefully exciting sounds that will make the listener enlightened.

14. thank you for the time any closing thoughts here

Thank you for the interview, it was a pleasure.
